10th November, 2010Obesity is now regarded as a potential public health crisis. A healthy diet combined with physical activity form the foundations of any weight management programme.
A healthy diet is about achieving the correct balance. This means basing meals on starchy foods (high in fibre where possible), eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day, moderate meat, fish and dairy products consumption and only occasional consumption of foods high in saturated fat, sugar and salt. Alongside life-style changes supplementing with conjugated linoleic acid and green coffee can promote body fat loss and lean mass gain.
A recently published review highlights that individuals who received green coffee experienced an average of 2.47kg weight loss greater than those who received a dummy pill. Green coffee is proposed to work by inhibiting an enzyme which is responsible for the release of glucose from the liver in to circulation; hence glucose used for the production of energy is instead drawn from fat tissue stimulating weight loss.
Conjugated Linoleic Acids (CLA) are polyunsaturated fatty acids present in foods from ruminant sources such as beef and cow’s milk. As well as green coffee there is also evidence to suggest CLA has a significant beneficial effect on body composition. It is thought to work by decreasing fat cell size, inhibiting the formation of new fat cells, inhibiting the storage of fat and promoting the use of burning fat for fuels.
It is important to remember that optimum results are only achieved in conjunction with a balanced diet and physical activity.
